Author : Jyoti Kaurav |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Urbanization in India has occurred further gradually than in other rising countries and the quantity of the population in urban areas has been only 28 per cent based on the 2001 census. The pace of urbanization is now set to accelerate as the country sets to a more rapid growth. Economic reform has already unleashed investment and development offering its citizens rich opportunities. Surging growth and employment in cities will prove a powerful magnet. 300 million Indians
currently live in towns and cities. Within 20-25 years, another 300 million people will get added to Indian towns and cities. This urban expansion will happen at a speed quite unlike anything that India has seen before. It took nearly forty years for India’s town population to rise by 230 million. It could take only half the time to add the next 250 million. If not well managed, this predictable increase in India’s urban population will place enormous stress on the system. |

the populations of fish even in very low doses. Metals such as copper and zinc can leach into water from the mining industry, via storm drains and from agricultural run-off from fields. Although levels of these metals are monitored in water, at such low levels as 2 parts per billion they are considered almost too insignificant to worry about. FROM COLONIAL TO COSMOPOLITAN VISION: A READING OF V.S. NAIPAUL’S INDIA: A MILLION MUTINIES NOW |
Author : K. Matia |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Contemporary travel writing plays an important role in
globalisation. Travel writers document encounters with different cultures across the globe and celebrate differences instead of expressing contempt on what they consider to be a deviation from mainstream culture. While some Western travel writers even today continue to produce travel narratives that mimic the colonial forbears, there is another category of travel writers who have abandoned the colonial heritage and embrace
cosmopolitanism and pluralism by accepting and recognising cultural differences and values common to all cultures. This paper attempts to show that V.S. Naipaul, a contemporary travel writer has moved from colonial vision to a truly cosmopolitan vision in the last book of the Indian trilogy, India: A Million Mutinies Now. Naipaul has written two travel
narratives on India in the past which provoked critical responses from readers and critics alike for his negative portrayal of India. His representation of India is seen as a typical colonial representation of the Third World. However, in the third book, Naipaul changes his stance and attitude towards India and reveals his new cosmopolitan outlook by giving voice to the people, accepting differences in opinions and beliefs and
seeing positive growth in the present disorder. |
